Harakeke | Flax

Harakeke (NZ flax) has been used by Māori for many hundreds of years for items such as clothing, baskets, mats, fishing lines and nets. Muka, the flax fibre from harakeke, was in high demand in the 1800's for ship ropes, and there was a thriving trade in muka between Tauranga Māori and traders coming to Tauranga.
