Enjoying Objects - Handy Hints

How to handle objects...
We want your students to feel comfortable handling our objects. This will ensure close and focused examination and will optimise learning.

Here are some handy hints to ensure safe handling:

  • Before passing the object around talk with students about how they will handle it. This could be an opportunity to get students come up with the rules themselves and think of the reasons behind them.
  • Stress that while an object won’t break it is ‘special’.
  • Get students to check that their hands are clean.
  • Hold objects with both hands preferably over a soft surface.
  • Only hold one object at a time and support it at the bottom.
  • Avoid picking an object up by its handle.
  • Wear gloves if they have been provided.
  • Pass objects while seated.
